  • DIY Rod Holders

I just put this together, I'm looking for some opinions before I glue them together. The two at the end will be used for trolling. I will have to add some strap to secure them. Other than that I'm looking for some suggestions

    Thanks

You should tilt the trolling holders somewhat forward so you are able to see the tips of your rods without turning around too much.

I made mine with the trolling holders tilted forward, but wish I had made them more forward because I still have to turn my head to see them.

Also, pvc glue alone doesn't seem to hold well enough to the stress of trolling, a lot of us have put stainless screws in the joints in addition to the glue. Just make sure the screw will not interfere with putting you rod in there.

I would turn the ones you plan to use for trolling so the rod tip will be visible without turning back.

I suggest drilling small screws in the structural pieces as well or instead of the glue as it will allow you to change the set up and add an arm for crabbing, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will definitely looking to secure it with screws and tilt the trolling rod forward.

          Hey Khanh,

I just made a holder/trolling set up for my outback. They will be inserted in my rear rod holders as well. I used 1 1/2" pvc with glue and 4 #8 stainless steel screws at each joint. The three middle holders are pointed at a 90 degree angle and the trolling outriggers I had to toy with to get them positioned. I flared each holder with a torch and pressed a wine bottle in each pipe. This makes the rods easier to enter the holders when reaching behind me. Then used a 7/8" paddle bit and drilled a hole 4" down on each pipe and used a jigsaw to follow the edges of the hole to the top of the pipes. This allows my spinning rods to nestle tightly into the holders. I also angled the outer pipe slots so the bails of the three reels would not touch. If I am not using the trolling tubes, I place my net in one and the other becomes a nice arm rest.

In my opinion I like the rigidness of using solid pipe as opposed to just a collar to hold the rods. But there is neither a right or wrong way my friend....I think they are coming along nicely! That's a fine looking tarpon you got there, LOL!

Aye Jeremy. It's a nice tarpon, too bad it doesn't come with a DIY rod holders premade . I didn't have enough time today to get the screws, plus I want to play around with the position for the trolling rod holder before I tighten it down. So, for my maiden voyage tomorrow. I just add two 1.25 inches pvc to the flush mount to raise it up, so I got 2 rocket launcher flush mounts. That will do for now. I hope I will get a snakehead tomorrow. Almost all the yaker that I talked to, came back with at least one snakehead. So, crossing my finger for tomorrow!!

Hey Sparky1423 - how about making one for me. I like the rig you made there. Is the pipe that goes into the rod holder a 1 1/4"? I don't think a 1 1/2" fits into the flush mount rod holder does it?

                  Hey Mustafa,

I have to give credit, where credit is due. I basically designed my rod holders off of an old thread and pics you posted and off of some pics that Reelaxin10 added. I made a few tweaks here and there to make it personal. I am actually thinking of changing the angle of the trolling tubes. Right now, I don't like how high my rod tips are when I am trolling. I am afraid my xraps might run more shallow then their intended depths.

I was going to cut off a few inches and glue on a threaded male coupler. Then screw on a female coupler with a glued 45 fitting and then about a foot of pipe to place my trolling rods in. This will cause my trolling tubes to extend past the sides of the kayak, but I can position my rods closer to the water and more perpenticular. When I am finished I can unthread the extensions and return to the original holder design with the glued male threads still attached.
