  • Hog Trough Storage

What we need is a paddle holder type setup for the hog troughs. Someplace universally secure and handy to quickly and securely have access to measure a fish and put the trough back without a hassle- The fact the thing is 31 inches long, four inches wide, made from rigid plastic and doesn't float complicate having one onboard the limited storage of a kayak. In my spare paddle holder I had a wooden yardstick on my last fishing trip- the paddle keeper bungee cord worked perfectly and the stick stayed securely attached and easily reached to quickly measure fish- out of the way, and handy. And based on MKF suggestions I used the spray insulating foam sprayed in the voids under the hog trough to add buoyancy so if I accidentally drop it overboard it doesn't sink- Sounds like another Kayak development project for YakAttack-they make a bracket for the BlackPack for the Hog Trough, but...the trough sits sideways on the crate sticking out on one side easily in the way when you have a fish on and just not the best setup-

Under my right leg in the footwell is where I store mine. The vertical part sits perfectly behind the rudder pedal. It took a few trips for me to figure that out, but its the perfect space for it on my yak.

They make the Bullwinkle and a holder for the blackpak which would be fitted to other things. I just kind of stuff the open end into my crate and it come out easy, but it does get in the way sometimes.

Yeah Metro, that works good in my Ocean but not at all in my Hobie- the mirage drive makes anything in the footwells out of the question- I went out this a.m. and started looking around for mounting locations on my Hobie- don't think there are any, so it must be on the equipment I carry, kinda like what YakAttack did on their blackpak- if I do that, it will be vertically mounted, not horizontal.

I think I posted it last year. That's why I already had the pics for upload now.

I also posted a home-made hand gaff (e.g., for snakeheads, etc.), which is one of my favorite items.

Another idea: I also secured 1/4" plywood (with just about same dimensions of the trough) to the trough for extra strength. (An earlier caught fat 27" striper broke my trough in two during weigh in, but I repaired it using model plastic glue)

I second the floating tip. I did the Rob Choi method and it has saved my hawg trough several times.

I did the Tufnick tip- used 1/8 inch plywood and foam glued it in place- nice and solid- used permanent marker to highlight every 1/2 inch mark, too- I used 1 inch by 6 inch white cedar board to build my Trough bracket inside my crate- secured it with heavy duty electrical ties- I put mine in a corner of my crate instead of centering it like Tufnick did- secure, easy access-

It's a little heavier, but strong. Plywood was treated with Helmsman Spar Urethane.

like the plywood might have to trick mine out that way

Does YakAttack make an attachable holder for the hog trough? That seems simple and attachable to just about anything. I just slide the trough under the turnbuckles holding my crate. Although, most of the time I forget the trough. I have kind of gotten over that whole, "mine is longer than yours" thing long ago.
