I think I posted it last year. That's why I already had the pics for upload now.

I also posted a home-made hand gaff (e.g., for snakeheads, etc.), which is one of my favorite items.

Another idea: I also secured 1/4" plywood (with just about same dimensions of the trough) to the trough for extra strength. (An earlier caught fat 27" striper broke my trough in two during weigh in, but I repaired it using model plastic glue)

What do use for a hook on the gaff? I saw one at the swap meet but wasn't going to pay money for one. I saw BSP sells an aluminum trough that should be strong enough but very curved and certainly difficult to float.

So how well does the sharpie hold up?
I was thinking of using using paint if it will hold up better.

Pig,

Bent the pegboard hook to shape. Add notches and sharpen. Epoxy to dowel. Apply spar urethane to dowel. Works great.

I think paint would chip and/or crack off from the flexing of the Hawg Trough...where as the permanent marker "stains" it. You can scrap the marker off with a knife, but it's not easy.

Im in the third season with tge hawg trough and have done two applications with sharpie to the line. Im due for another application, but don't feel like it, you can read it well enough....

I also added wood dowel rods sealed in with caulk in the slots on the underside for floatation, it works great!

I sand the lines lightly with fine sandpaper to roughen the surface, then I use Sharpie.

My Hawg Trough, not horrible...but some stray marks. Marker calibration was not completely figured out...started marking the quarter inch lines after three fine tuning beers. Actually better than the one inch and half inch lines that were applied last evening. I put some lines at the lip end, because I saw someone else did that, makes it more obvious in CPR pictures that the fish nose it touching.



The 1/2" foam for floatation, locked in with hot glue gun. And of course my signature cowboy hat.
