There are two different ram tube holders. I am assuming one is more durable but can anyone justify why getting the more expensive one would be better? Or should I simply buy the cheaper 2008 one? Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would get the one less likely to slip and drop your rod overboard. I may not be the best one to comment on Ram holders for rods. I have always been skeptical of the slipping of the tube on the ball mount. I do quite a lot of trolling, so maybe that is why I have doubt. I have always leaned towards Scotty, which locks in place. I use a Ram ball mount for my depth finder, great flexibility. There are probably others with more experience with the Ram holders for rods. Good luck with your decision.

i agree with dogfish, i have used scotty mounts bc of the slip with ram balls. i havent put any scotty mounts on my current yak, but do plan on it.

Agreed. Even if you don't gorilla torque the ram mounts down, they won't slip. Especially if you have the drag on your reel set reasonably. I could fold a rod in half before these mounts slip.

the video just shows ways to make it limit the slip, which also limits the angles available, or to tether to your seat and leash the rods.

Wow, thank you everyone for the input. I decided to go with the metal coated ones because they seem more durable.

don't know if you already bought it, but i just got a 2008 version bc it was about $20 w/o the base (i had a base already). I had the same question as you, and after getting the 2008 version it's very strong and thick plastic. I think it'll last a long time.
