PVC kayak/canoe seat

I have tried numerous seat additions to make my ride a bit more comfortable. I've tried a high end kayak seat, a canvas stadium seat, and currently using a gel seat. The first two were returned after one attempted use. They just didn't work with my Frontier 12.

Note the back seat in this pic (only one I have with me at the moment).

What I really need is a seat with a strong backrest. My kayak is a hybrid with canoe type bench seats. So, what I am thinking of doing is making one from pvc that will somehow attach under or off to the sides of the current bench seat. Cushions are not a concern as I know I can find something to make the seat comfortable once I have the pvc frame.

Does anyone here have a seat that they have made from pvc? I found the following one, which I think I can adapt to work with my kayak:

Any suggestions or photos of what you currently have made of pvc are greatly appreciated. I am looking for different ideas to choose from.

On another note, and this may not seem like a lot to you, I had to learn from YouTube how to solder. Not as bad as I thought it would be. I had to install an inline fuse holder for my fish finder, which required soldering and heat shrink wrap. It may not be the prettiest soldered connection, but it looks and feels strong, and is now under shrink wrap, so looks aren't important. Right after I did the soldering, I found some smaller gauge solder, which I might have been able to use to do a neater connection.

what if you buy a hobie angler 12 seat and just bolt it down? couple other kayak makers that make a similar seat i think. or maybe cut down a beach or pool chair?

That Hobie seat is awesome! I have considered a beach or pool chair. I tried a seat similar to the one from LL Bean. It didn't work out.

I am going to look more into the Hobie seat. Thanks for the info.

0526131443[1].jpg0526131444[1].jpg0526130849[1].jpgi have an ocean kayak drifter and the seat was killing me. tried several and decided to modify a boat seat from walmart. the seat is not permanantly mounted but can be installed in 10 seaconds and can even pick the yak up with it. with the drifter being so wide its stable as hell. i have even had it below the conawingo dam .

Well, I tried another kayak seat. It slid and slipped around, loosening the 4 point attachments. It felt great while on land. It took paddling on water to find out how it would really perform.

I think the next seat I will try will be like what susqeyaker posted. My seats flip over and accept seats like this. It seems that only a seat that isn't going to move out of place will work.

I'm going to buy a larry chair and try to modify it. If I get it worked out I'll post pics.

You could install a seat base in the existing seat or on a piece of composite board if you don't want to put holes or screws in the seat.

You could use about any boat seat, like a Tempress, etc. that suits you.
