  • Fish Finder question

I'm trying to decide which fish finder to buy. I have couple of options. I'm trying to install this on OK Trident 13
    it
Lowrance Elite 5 DSI with GPS:
Pros: solid, well built units, display structure and bait fish very well
Cons: no scupper hole, doesn't show predator fish

    Hummingbird 597 & GPS:
    Pros: scupper hole transducer
Cons: it has problem display trolling speed

I appreciate any comments and suggestions.

I'd recommend the lowrance. We have one on our bigger center console and I have a Mark-4 on my skiff (soon to be used on my kayak) that shoots thought he hull. Gives excellent readings and easy to distinguish between bait and bigger fish. Those "predator" fish images are really just solid returns that the unit displays as a fish shape, not necessarily fish.

I have a Lowrance, and I was definitely able to install their scupper transducer on my yak.

I have the Elite 4DSI and I really like the unit since I put it on my Outback in January. I would recommend the Lowrance. How do you figure the unit won't show predator fish? If you know what you're looking for you can decipher a lot of different species of fish, or at least have a good idea what they are.

I read the comment on Cabelas. They said the Lowrance unit is good in everything except showing big predator fish.

Check out Jack's "pinch" post from earlier this year on their blog. He uses the same unit as you are talking about. This is exactly how the predator fish will show if they are stripers:

I saw some reviews saying that the 4DSI is hard to see in the direct sun. Is that a common complaint?

I have mine on a ram mount so I just tilt it towards me if its in direct sunlight and then I can see it.

That might explain the complaints since they seem mostly tO come from trolling motor setups probably fixed to the deck
