  • Fishfinder help connecting to the 12v battery

I'm working with a hummingbird fish finder and small 12v battery. I used alligator clips to connect. When I went to discount it was spark city and almost started a small fire. How can I connect to the battery??? Thanks! I want to be able to disconnect. Also I need to find a grommet for passing the two wires to the unit. Thanks again

Automotive female insulated connectors to size with battery male connectors or go to marine supply store.

Sounds like you removed the wire from the hot (red) terminal before removing the black terminal.

It would also help to make sure the cable is disconnected from your fish finder before removing the individual wires from the terminals. There won't be any connection to cause a spark if the fish finder is disconnected.

I agree. I connect the wires to the battery before connecting the plug on the back of the fish finder.

I'd get rid of the alligator clips and get a semi permanent two wire connector coming of the battery. Easy plug in connection after that with no sparks. I also always connect the battery before plugging in the FF. What type of terminals do you have on the battery? If male automotive, as On the fly said, you could also just you some female connectors. Much more secure and less likely to spark than alligator clips. My setup below.

So get female connectors and connect to battery before fish finder and unplug from fish finder before disconnect. Thanks. I wanted to be able to remove the unit with ease....

The female connectors just slide on and should be just as quick or quicker than alligator clips. They also grip much better.
