Thanks for sharing, that is some good info. So basically my plain jane X-4 pro in 12ft of water is only seeing a 4ft circle on the bottom? Most of the fishing I do is in less than 20ft of water, which type of fish finder would best fit this scenario?

Good luck with the new fish finder Keith.

Derekfish....someone on here had a forumla at one time they posted on how to convert frequency angle and then your depth and see what your coverage is at the bottom. I don't recall it but am sure it is somewhere on the internet. Another good resource that was recommended on here was http://www.crappie.com/crappie/forum.php Those guys love their electronics. Great forum for information.

Here is an 81 page thread just on DSI

Actually the more I thought it wasn't as complicated as I assumed. You are trying to find the base diameter of a cone and you know your angle and height.

        http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/55033.html

        Using 83hz (60deg) @ 12'....Cone diameter=2*h*tan(angle/2) or 2(12')(tan(60/2))=13.9'
        Using 200hz (20deg) @12'....2(12')(tan(20/2))=4.2'
