  • Do Watermen Find Lots of Lures?

I love crabs... I hate crab pots.
Some days it seems like I'm fishing in a mine field.

My most recent casualty was a 5" Rat-L-Trap, and I got to thinking....

I wonder if watermen find lots of lures hooked in their crab pot buoy lines.

I was a commercial crabber from 1992-1995 and we would on occasion find Tony spoons or surgical hoses on the pots and occasionally a lure on the float line but not very often.

Just part of the game around here. I hardly ever lose any on crab pot lines. When I get hung up on one, I just circle around and retrieve it. I do get snagged on other things all the time, but more often than not I am able to follow it back and ease it out from the direction I came.

I've caught a few lines and one pot. I circled back and got my lure free.

I caught one pot that didn't have a rope on it, and lifted it off the bottom with my rod and 20# braid to get my lure back. I was trying to break the line, but wouldn't break and the pot came up instead.

Not the fun kind of fight, but at least I got my $5 plug back.

Ya know... I've often wondered about the placement of crab pots.
I'm certainly not one to go about regulating this and that... but at times
it sure has been a pain going through these "mine" fields.

It's cool when they are arranged symmetrically... and you can navigate
while trolling through them... but well... as this thread is all about...

You get better at mine sweeping the pots... and I've recovered all my lures.

My heart does go out to a waterman that pulls a pot out of the water and gets
              shanked by a lost lure.

The only thing for me that sucked one day, on a good wind and tide current...
Was I had a Ray hit one of my other rods... as I was anchored (for the wind and current)
to get my lure off a pot.

Oh well... and so it shall be. Sometimes the spot and the birds are there...
And sometimes.... you catch a Ray.
