  • Jig Hook Question

I have two "Do-It" molds and made a good number of jig heads last spring. I have the "Pill Head" and the "Ultra Minnow" mold. I tie buck tails on some jigs and others I leave undressed for soft plastics.

I used the recommended Eagle Claw 570 series hooks on my jigs. Yesterday and Tuesday the 20 inch stripers bent the Eagle Claw 4/0 hook on my jigs. It was not serious. They didn't straighten it. But I felt it necessary to bend the hook back to form. The jigs continued to work.

But...Is there a stronger hook that will fit the above Do-It molds?

    Many thanks,

The Mustad 570 series hooks are a Aberdeen hook. They are light wire hooks and designed to straighten when snagged rather than break so you do not lose your lure. This works great on crappie fishing but not for larger species as you found out.

A better hook for our style of fishing in the saltwater would be a Gamakastu 90 degree, Heavy Wire, jig hook. http://www.gamakatsu.com/fishing-hooks.php?pid=1175

Mark, I will see if Bass Pro carries them when I go in this afternoon.
