      Romo,

I tried a Texas-rigged worm a couple of trips ago. That's somewhat similar to your method. It slipped nicely through the downed branches with no snags and had a life-like action with the curly tail. I got no interest from the pickerel that day but the bite was slow. However given your success I think I will try it again.

I'm new to the area and would def like to get out and meet you guys. Unfortunately my kayak and gear are about 20' deep in a storage facility for the next couple months. Do you guys have a monthly meet and greet?

The Snaggedline.com community has an informal meet and greet on the water somewhere in the region every month except January. Anyone who is interested can show up and fish. The group goes to a local restaurant afterwards for lunch and conversation. During January, we typically meet somewhere at Arundel Mills for a planning meeting to schedule the dates, locations, and organizers for each of the other months.

I am coordinating the December meet and greet on Dec 13 on the Severn River.. You are welcome to come and fish. If your gear is not available, you can join the group for lunch afterwards.

Sounds like I'll see you guys in the Spring.

I have done quite a lot of kayak fishing in the lowcountry areas of SC. Mostly targeting redfish, trout, shark, flounder, sheepshead, and cobia. Seems that the local ecosystem is very similar plus/minus a few species, but I'm guessing the fishing pressure is greater. Looking forward to some new waters and new people to paddle with!

My drysuit arrived today so it looks like I am in. Most likely going to launch at Jonas Green.

I would like to head out and test the suit a bit this weekend if the weather agrees.

According to the American Canoe Association, a cold water situation occurs anytime the water temperature drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius) or when the combined air and water temperature is less than 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius). In temperatures such as these paddlers need to dress for the water temperature, because an accidental swim could quickly kill.

There are two rules that apply to these temperatures when unprotected. The first is the 5-50-50 rule and the second is the 1-10-1 rule. In the first rule, a paddler has about five minutes to swim 50 yards in 50 degree water, and he has 50/50 chance of surviving. The second rule states that an unprotected swimmer will suffer cold shock for about one minute, then have about 10 minutes until he can no longer function until finally succumbing to hypothermia an hour later assuming he doesn’t drown before then.

I'm guessing that you probably had combined temps that were less that 120 degrees down in South Carolina in the winter. Years ago before I knew better I went out with inadequate protection during the winter. Fortunately I never turtled. My guess would be that the Severn River will probably be about 43 to 45 degrees on Saturday.

I was considering joining in on the fishing. I haven't been ouy since the summer. What tackle/bait should I bring?

                              Thanks!

First off -- before fishing in the cold air and water, make sure you have the right protective gear. If you don't have the right gear, don't try fishing now. You can join the group for lunch. If you do have the right gear, here are some tips I sent to another Snaggedline member today.

This time of year I use a 1/8-oz jighead and a live minnow, and I am doing well. If I did not have live minnows, I would substitute a Gulp with a floppy tail, a plastic paddletail or twister tail. Some guys use Mepps spinners or small hard plastic lures. I prefer lures with single J hooks.

I use a 6 ft ultralight rod, 1000 series reel, and 10-lb Powerpro with a 20-lb mono leader.

If you send me your email address via pmail, I can send you a Powerpoint presentation I made on pickerel fishing in tidal waters.
