Replacing Trebles on Hardbaits

Looks good! Probably need something on par with a postal scale or maybe even something more sensitive to know for sure what the difference is in weight.

My scale is not accurate enough to give exact weight differences but the trebles showed 1 gram and the singles showed 2 grams for the pair. I would need a better scale or a greater multiple of hooks to weigh since my scale rounds to the nearest gram.

My friend replaced the trebles with single hooks on some of his hard baits, he tied feathers on the hooks also. He was catching stripers on them last fall.

Usually you go up 3 hook sizes when changing from Trebles to a single hook. BUT then you get into tuning and each lure type and size you use will need to be tested at the dock for its action in comparison to what it used to do. Plan on getting many different sizes and experimenting with each lure and save a log of yor changes for the future because you will forget what size to use.

Sadly I have found that my bathtub isnt deep enough to really get a good sense of the action of a crankbait. I will I knew someone close by who had a pool

VMC ILS 1/0 or 2/0. I don't think a circle hook will cut it.....



For anything smaller than the above, I would move to a # 1 or #2 and I can't find that size!

I will have lots of trebled hardbaits for sale this Saturday.

Hookups rate is defiantly affected....but so what? Don't have to deal with the mess trebles cause (and sometimes injury to fish and human).

I'm probably doing something wrong, but I generally just cut two of the hook ends off of trebles if I don't have single hooks on hand to swap out.

Thanks....missed that at 1st. These will work on smaller baits for sure. I like the VMC for the bigger baits because of the weight and strength.

I test swam the Pointer 100 last evening and:

- straight retrieve looked fine
- twitching looked fine
- LOST the ability to suspend - it now sinks tail down.

I am going to remove the tail hook and try again. One single hook should still be OK - it will be like most of the paddletail/jig baits many if us troll with.

I'll post again after I try it.

Yes, it has which is odd given I've never caught a yellow perch in the Bay.

I've also had good success with shades of blue on crank baits.
