I have been wearing swim Jammers as a base layer year round sine I started kayak fishing in 2008. I still wear the first pair I bought even thought they are starting get worn out. They offer no warmth value in cold weather but will prevent chafing wet or dry. In the summer they dry quickly if they get wet.

www.swimoutlet.com has some good sales on them,

Everyone should believe in something... I believe I'll go fishing.

Merino blend base layers from costco work well, but I think they sold out a while back. Pretty much anything but cotton. Basketball shorts, ex-offico style pants, thin jogging pants. Are you talking about about underpants, aka tighty whities? I don't ever wear them. I wear boxers when I'm not fishing, so would not know...I don't wear boxers or underpants when I am wearing waders or drysuit--just base layers, basketball shorts...etc.
