How do you transport your rods? Innovative ideas, products or DIY.

I did a few searches on the forum and nothing glaring popped out at me. I'm trying to plan for long trips and local excursions, with some nearly 8 foot rods....I do have a Silverado, so I was thinking some sort of rack system for the bed. Security and non exposure to the elements would be preferable.

I researched ROD PODS from A.R.E.,but those are around $500 bucks. For what looks like fancy PVC.

I have a rig made with large diameter pvc pipe that attaches to my tracrac. The back screws off and is drilled for securing with a cable lock. It is just the same type of thing you see a lot of plumbing and hvac contractors riding around with.

This is exactly what I have, but I clamp it on top of the tracrac on my silverado.

This was what I was thinking! The toast always has some good vids. Thanks for sharing. Now I just need a way to secure them easily to the truck.

Probably not much help, but i leave my rods in my kayak's rod tubes of the pro angler. While strapped in my truck for transport. You could just get some 4-5" pvc and get end caps that thread on. And use big stainless hose clamps to attatch to the underside of a roof rack or if theres room strap them down next to your kayak on your roof.

Yakima Powerhound. I use them for transporting surf rods down the beach and my kayak rods down the road.

I have transported rods like that for a 6.5hr drive north for steelhead fishing, when we got to the hotel since my rods were not rigged with anything the wind would crank my reels And i ended up loosing some crank handles from it... So from now on i put rods in a protected tube and reels in a book bag. When i drive to tennesse for a week every year i bring rods and there atleast in a cardboard tube.

I love seeing how everyone configures their vehicle to solve their particular fishing or gear issues. Quite inventive bunch. I did get to see Coops rod holders in the person a few weeks ago. My requirement for my SUV required that whatever that I put in it, I can quickly remove and return the SUV to a human carrier . My rod holders are similar to Coop's....thanks Coop. They are just wood that are cut to fit snugged between my SUV's handles. I have two pairs of handle. One at the back of the vehicle and one at the front of the vehicle behind he driver and front passenger. I then got the Bass Pro plastic rod holders that have foam to hold the rods securely without vibration and they have a twist lock mechanism to lock each rod in place. I screwed the rod holders to the wood beams, like Coop did. The good thing is that to remove the rod holder, they just pull out. No screwing, gluing or nailing to your vehicle. I think I first saw such a hookup at last years Susky Jamboree, in which M Miller did this same thing to his truck.

I trailer two Pro Anglers. I used 4" PVC for bunks and I can put 4 rods in each - reels removed of course. Rods in rod cases prevent damage. Round trip to Florida and they traveled just fine. I think you could make some pretty cheap transport tubes from the lighter weight drainage pipe, and bungee cords to keep them on a roof rack.

Hadn't considered drainage pipe.

What about a spray on coating for the pipes? Make them look rugged, less PVC'y.
