I have paddled the past two days on semi-open water. Just wanted to offer a heads up as follows:
Skim ice can of course be easily navigated. There remains much thicker ice than skim in many of our creeks. I tried breaking some ice yesterday to open up a favorite spot that was maybe 1.5" thick. That's enough to partially support the weight of a kayak, such that I was paddling up an onto the ice, using my weight to break it.....not recommended!!!!!! The Kayak looses it's stability in a big way when it rises up onto the ice.
No more ice breaking for me!
