  • Monocacy River

Anyone on here ever yakfish the Monocacy for smallies? Was talking about it with a work buddy today and wanted to give it a try this year but really didn't have a sense for where to put in etc. Just looking to see if anyone can share past experience.

I fish the upper part of monocacy near detour and tend to just walk through the river. I have tried a float trip in a tube from detour area to legore bridge which is about a 6 hour float trip and that was awesome. Was able to float and cast and caught tons and I mean tons of smallies.

Any run off and that stream is muddy. Too much farm land up stream. I've fished south of Frederick on foot and down at the outlet to the Potomac. Lots of mean bluegills and small-smallies. Bring light tackle. I haven't kayaked the Potomac at at monocacy yet because I'm concerned about being able move up stream and negotiate the current but really shallow and weedy water.

FYI---- there is a 10' waterfall at Forest and stream club couple of miles up stream from Creagerstown bridge, you can portage around it.

I caught plenty of smallies and sunfish last year on the one trip I made there. A small gulp alive minnow did real well with a circle hook in the nose. I also caught a bunch on a pop-r. I went in the middle of summer and the water was very low. Had to drag my kayak through a few spots.

From most of these responses, it sounds like we're going to convert from a yak fishing trip to wade fishing instead. Thanks for the intel.

I have fished a couple sections.

From Buckeystown park to the confluence with Potomac. It gets wide and slow near mouth. Most times you have to paddle to go downstream. I have also fished the section from 355 to Buckeytown Park. The fish are smaller there than potomac. You most likely will see and catch some big goldfish in the stretch near lilypons.

It is a nice small river. It gets muddy real fast and clears slowly after a rain.

I've always enjoyed fishing it. It's a nice little float.
