  • Dry Suit Test...backstroking in the ice video

With all of your safety gear, the time to test it is before there's an actual emergency. In this video, I test out Kokatat's Expedition Suit in icy waters to see how it compares to a previous video where I wore waders and a dry top. These waters are 32 degrees which are extremely treacherous conditions. Any water under 60 degrees should be treated with caution. The air temperature can be deceiving.

The video can be found on Light Tackle Kayak Trolling the Chesapeake Bay's Facebook Page:

    or on You Tube:

The end result was that the dry suit was superior to the waders with a dry top. With the dry suit I felt as if I could be there indefinitely and actually have a chance if I were to get separated from my kayak. I was plenty warm and the icy waters did not bother me. With the waders and dry top, water did seep in and I'd say it'd be a good versatile combo without breaking the bank, you'd need to get back in the yak pretty quickly. It would not be ideal in a really sticky situation, but infinitely better than what I see a lot of folks wearing out there. I've tested them both out and you can see the waders with dry top video here:

thanks for the video... i am thinking of picking up a dry top for myself. as nice as a dry suit may be, i dont think i can afford one at the moment. currently have a pair of stockingfoot waders that i could pair with a dry top. what kind of shoes were you wearing with your dry top? were you wearing the same kind of shoes when you had waders?

With the dry suit I was wearing neoprene booties....Kokatat Scout shoes. With the waders, they have a neoprene stocking foot so I wore crocs over those thicker feet. Also, I'm selling the top I wore in the waders video since I don't really need it anymore. It's a size XL

maybe i dont quite under how neoprene works.. since my stockingfoot waders have the neoprene booties or socks attached on the bottom, does that mean i can step in the water without my feet getting soaked? or will the socks i wear underneath get wet?

Oh, you'll be dry with the neoprene that is attached to the bottom of the waders. You'll be completely dry. The stocking feet on the dry suit I have is just the material as the rest of the dry suit, which will not allow in water. It just allows a wide array of footwear. The neoprene will keep you warm.
