  • Need Reliable Full-Featured Weather Website

I used to love Weather Underground. Their hour by hour daily forecasts were almost always right on the money.
However after this weekend I can't trust them anymore. They called for clear and calm on Saturday and I got cloudy, rough, and rain out there. Then Sunday was beautiful.

Everyone makes mistakes now and then, but looking at their website today they show current winds below 5mph but the forecast says they should be kicking up to over 10mph any minute now. Been like that for the last 2 hours.

So what does everyone else use?
I'm looking for detailed daily predictions for a specified area, showing at least temps and wind speed.

I like windfinder, it has many locations it reports on around the bay, gives wind ( direction, average and gusts), temp, rain forecast and for some locations the tide in about 3 hour increments. I use it a lot to decide where I'm going to fish.

I had the exact same experience as you did with weather underground...I was out there on Saturday thinking what the heck, it's colder and windier than I expected and then Sunday turned out beautiful. What gives?

+1 for windfinder. The app is really handy I have about 20 places stored as favorites and they are rarely, if ever, wrong. Buoyweather.com is another good one if you're heading offshore

Keep in mind that weather forecasters are often making educated guesses. They are right some times, but wrong other times. I use windfinder as my first stop. You can visit the Forecast and Super Forecast tabs to give wind projections from two different models. It helps to get estimates of wind speed and also direction. The Report tab allows you to see the actual recent wind speed at a station -- you can correlate that with the projections for that time period that had been posted earlier.

You can also find the tides using the windfinder site. If I am trying to determine when a rain storm is likely to start or end, I often use the hourly forecast from weather.com. Armed with those pieces of information, you can make an informed decision.

Last summer, windfinder fooled me often as I launched my center console from Sandy Pt expecting to find calm seas but actually found 2-3 ft seas. No weather site is right all the time.

As for wind on the bay (or any open bodies of water) I generally suggest adding +5 mph to any forecast to get a more realistic picture. When you get out in the open it all gets amplified.

An old timer once told me to add the range together for the real wind forecast. For instance 0 - 5 = 5mph, 5 - 10 = 15 mph, etc.

                  Windfinder looks promising.

I'll admit it was my fault for relying on just one source of information for my weather needs. But for now, Windfinder will be replacing Weather Underground on my PalmPilot.

Looking at windfinder and tideforfishing and Sunday afternoon on the severn is looking pretty promising. Saturday looks like a no go everywhere I look because of high winds.
