How far will you paddle/pedal to reach a chosen fishing spot? I bought a Native Slayer 145 last September. My son has a yak as well. We have been venturing out of different launches trying different fish plans. We try to launch where we can troll right off the bat, especially important in this rock season. It just seems that a lot of the best spots are 1 1/2 miles or better to reach and I feel like we spend a good portion of our time in unproductive waters. Any "rules of thumb that you guys live by?" After work evening spots are especially challenging as our time on the water is limited.

I don't know where you are but many spots in St Mary's are "fish from launch" locations. I have one rock spot where I may never get more than 1/4 mile from the launch and fish as soon as I clear the ramp. Going longer in many cases is a personal choice vice a must do. In summer I don't think you'll need to go as far as you think, and if you are willing to pursue fish like perch in the evening maybe even less.Mike

I am on the lower Eastern Shore. I have been staying bayside so far. We have a lot of "closed" areas for rock this time of year that make it even more challenging. I ended up putting over at Dames Quarter today, and went clear out across the channel to Great Shoals. 1.38 miles on Google Earth. Took about 45 minutes. Wasn't too bad, just seemed "far enough"! I have had power boats before, and have logged unreal hours out there. This whole Yak thing is a different animal. I spend an awful lot of time looking at charts trying to find spots. Hopefully our efforts will start paying off, been slow fishing so far. I do like to hit some easy perch spots when time is short, and should be okay on grey trout. Rock, specks, and Reds are what I really want!

Seems like every place I've launched the fishing grounds are a mile or two away. With exception of Jonas Green, where I've caught fish a couple hundred yards from the beach...but still peddle a mile or two to better fishing.Hobie fleet:
