New to kayak fishing

Hey everyone! I live right near Jonas Green Park in Annapolis and I have a Predator 13. I am sort of new to kayak fishing and have been doing a lot of research and it seems most guys are trolling for rockfish. I was just wondering if all of you guys trolling were constantly paddling or if you all had the pedals which obviously makes it a quite a bit easier. Is there anything else that people have been doing in the severn to catch rockfish besides trolling? Also, anyone looking for a partner to go out with sometime just pm me! I'm definitely not new to fishing as I have a fishing boat but I am very new to the kayaking lifestyle that I absolutely fell in love with. Thanks for everyones responses and I look forward to meeting some of you!

Welcome to the forum! As the season gets warmer fishing tactics change but right now trolling works well. I fish from a paddle kayak, Jackson Cuba 14. I do paddle pretty constant, at least until I hook one. My kayak paddles easy and does not take much effort. Check the main forum regularly because any time we go out we post in the event anyone wants to join us.

Like Harry above, I'm trolling now. But as the water warms I'll cast crank baits, spinner baits and even flies to the structure along the shoreline of the Severn. Target the riprap and pier pilings and you'll pick up stripers and white perch. Also, there are oyster beds well marked by buoys in the Severn. Fan casting over them will bring stripers into your boat. Lastly, concentrate on the points where tributaries enter the Severn. Stripers often hang around them on an outgoing tide. There are many areas that produce fish in that river.

I stopped using my boat after I bought my peddle kayak. Like you, I fell in love with kayak fishing. Marc just gave out some really good advice. Hope to see you out on the water!

I'll take 4-5 with me but typically only wet 2 at a time to avoid tangles.

Ok very cool. Thats what I was thinking too. Still trying to figure out how and where to rig all of my rod holders and fish finder on my predator.

I tried four but it turned into a fiasco. Two in the water, one in the back wishing it were in the water.

A lot of us fabricate the rod holders out of PVC and attach them to a crate in the tank well. And image search should give you a few ideas.

Welcome aboard. I usually take out 4 rods and troll 4 rods. I'm use to it and have been doing it for awhile. I use a a DIY pvc rocket launcher that goes into the rod holders in the rear of my Outback.

Welcome to the Group!!! Ive noticed that trolling right now seems to work the best for me. Once i find a consistent spot where i find them biting i start casting in a circular pattern to zero in on where the school is. And as Harry said, keep checking the forum daily for potential meet ups! you learn a lot more in person and by words!

Anyone have any input on the best kayak anchor and/or anchor system? I am fishing mostly severn river and reservoirs.

I use to use an anchor. But since my first year fishing out of a kayak I haven't used one since. I will usually drift past an area paddle pack up if I think its productive then do another drift. On really windy days I back myself into a cove and use my foot to hold my position on bottom (always wear shoes of some kind) but this year I made a diy pole I can stick threw the scupper into soft bottom to hold my place. Yakattack sells them. They are called the parknpole.
