  • Tip of the Hat

A well deserved "Tip of The Hat" to John Veil and Mark Bange for their presentation at Free State Fly Fishers of Maryland on Wednesday night,
June 3rd. they were our Guest Speakers and they did the Kayak fishermen an outstanding job of representing our sport! Not only did they speak about all the benefits of Kayak fishing, they brought 2 fully rigged Kayaks with they for their show and tell. Every aspect of the sport was covered completely, type, safety, gear, rigging, clothing, lure selection the entire kitchen sink of the sport.
Mark covered the Fly Fishing end of this and just as John did he made believers out of the membership. I wouldn't be surprised if several of these guys go out and purchase Kayaks just from the excellent job of these Ambassadors of the Sport!
    WELL DONE GUYS!

        Mike -

Thank you for the kind words. I enjoy speaking to groups about subjects on which I am enthusiastic. I speak frequently for work-related subjects and even wrote a book about my experiences traveling the world on a series of lecture tours. But it is only recently that I have had the opportunity to talk to groups about fishing. It is rewarding to see new members gain confidence in choosing and rigging their kayaks and in catching fish from their boats. Snaggedline represents a unique community of people who are passionate about kayak fishing and are willing to share information without with others.

I have a kernel of an idea to set up an informal free winter kayak fishing seminar series at a local shop or restaurant. It would be patterned after what my Tampa guide friend has done for several years "Kayak Fishing Skool" as he calls it. Interested persons meet to talk about various kayak rigging and fishing topics, then adjourn for refreshments. I made some initial steps to start this last year, but the business which I approached in the fall did not follow through. If members of the Snaggedline community think they would support this concept (in the greater Annapolis area on a week night, once per month during the winter) please let me know and suggest a venue if you have any ideas.

          Mike,

          Thank you very much!

Believe me it was my pleasure.

I used to write and speak publicly during my work career on topics that were far less interesting to me. Speaking about something I thoroughly enjoy was a nice change and great fun. I hope my enthusiasm about kayak fishing was evident. The audience was certainly receptive and interested and made me feel very welcome.

Also, thank you for the FSFF hat. I saw a couple of folks wearing that hat in the audience and thought "what a nice looking lid." I was very happy to receive one.

Lastly, I think John's idea for winter gatherings is a great one. I would love to participate as both a guest and presenter.
