  • Uv protection

Well the Doctor told me today to start staying out of the sun without long sleeves and long pants on due to a change in Medication. No damage yet and he wants to keep it that way and so do I. So where is a good place to get the UV protection long sleeve shirts and the gloves and scarf's. Looking around Annapolis and Bass Pro Shoppes area.

Bass Pro sells several lines of fishing shirts that offer UV protection.

They wash well, have good ventilation and dry fast.

I bought several at on sale last winter at roughly $30 each.

I bought a couple pairs of long fishing pants also at Bass Pro that provide UV protection.

But sometimes, especially on cloudy days I wear shorts and tee shirt and lather up with sun screen. I realize that may not be an option for you due to your medicine.

      Mike -

During April I was taking a medication that made me hyper-sensitive to the sun. I went to Florida for four days of fishing. I covered up well with long sleeve shirt and long pants, water shoes, buff, and hat with neck flap. The only thing I forgot to do was cover the backs of my hands. By the end of Day 2 the backs of my hands were bright red with an itchy raised rash. I slathered them repeatedly with sunscreen on Day 3 to no avail. I went to a kayak store and bought an expensive pair of flyfishing gloves and finally had suitable protection. It took several weeks for the rash to go away.

If you are using medication that makes you sensitive to sunlight, do your best to cover up all exposed skin or stay inside on the brightest parts of the day. I look even goofier than normal when all suited up with sun protection gear -- but the fish don't seem to mind, and my fishing buddies tolerate it.

The only way I know it's John under all that cover is that he is usually guy in our group catching the most fish!

I fully cover my body, mainly because I don't like sunblock and it's hard to reapply when I'm out on the water for 12 hours. So i have a hat with a full brim and a neck cover thing (rei sahara outback), buff, columbia PFG long sleeve with collar, pants with the zipper that can become shorts (forgot the brand, got them on sale). And I recently got NRS HydroSkin Wetsocks, these get horrible reviews, but that is because people aren't realizing it's only .5mm neoprene. This doesn't really provide warmth, but it's GREAT on a yak in the weather we've been having. I'm waiting to see if they make me super hot in the middle of the summer, but it's doing great right now. Also recently got Buff Sport Series MXS Gloves, i'm iffy on these. they don't make me hot, but don't dry quickly.

Edit: forgot to mention that between bass pro and REI, you should be able to purchase all these items.

Sam's club sells long sleeve fishing shirts for $15. I ordered a pair of zipaway pants which convert into shorts an is breathable. Full brim miinetonka folding had. Face/neck covering as needed. As a redhead, I'm an expert.

Thanks to all that gave me some Great advice as usual on this site! John I never worry about looking "Goofy" that's my main look anyway and one of my favorite Disney folks. I was able to pick up the pants at Sam's Club today 50 upf with zip off legs to make shorts $17.83ea. They didn't have any shirts left. Went to HTO the store is bare bones now. Dick's in Crofton had long sleeve button up shirts Field and Stream Latitude 50 upf for $24.98 on sale and a neck Gaitor with 95 upf for $20.00. All toll not to bad a day.
These folks on Snaggedlines are what I have been telling people are the most helpful and friendly people you will ever meet.
                Thanks Again!

I have no affiliation with the company, but Salt Armour runs some really good deals on SPF shirts and buffs almost every weekend. I grabbed a 80% off promo code off their facebook page this past weekend. Replacing my weathered buffs for about $4 each.

I did a lot of shopping when I was looking for a uv blocking long sleeved shirt. The cheapest/best I could find is the basspro ones ($30). Super comfortable and do a good job of keeping you cool as well.

Another place to check out is Kohls ( I know just hear me out). I do LP for them and out of nowhere we started selling all sorts of Columbia UV protection gear. Some of it's really nice and it's pretty easy on the wallet as well.
