Do CNR eat anything but NEW lures?

Trolling between Sandy Point Light and the CBB had my Garmin lit up with what I was hoping were copious quantities of over active Rockfish. Plotting to pull a bigger guy (or gal) from under the main school, I broke out my latest addition to my tackle box - A big Yo-Zuri Deep Diving 3D jointed Minnow. Just took it out of the box when I launched the boat at the SPSP ramp. A mere 2 minutes into swimming this bait, I was hooked up and thinking I had this kayak fishing thing all figured out.

Well, I didn't... After a very fun 10 minute fight, I started to remember all the posts I had read about CNRs and figured I had fallen victim to the same fate as had so many others before me. I accepted my situation and determined that I wanted to at least try to get my lure back. It was new and it was expensive!

As I got the beast to the side of the boat, I also remembered reading of the stinger on their tail. I wasn't sure how to get past that, but figured I would assess the situation in the moment. As I reached for my long pliers, she finally broke off taking my new lure with her.....

Is it best just to go elsewhere where when these guys are on the prowl? It was shortly after the break-off that I started noticing many rays on the surface doing their thing. From the readings on the fish finder, they were everywhere.

ya last night i was catching good sized croaker off my pier hand over fist...then the bite stopped all of a sudden. i look north and about 50 feet from my pier are about 15 of those damn rays splashing and having fun. i doubt the croaker are on the menu for them but either way they disturbed the entire area for any chance at another bite. haven't hooked into one yet but not complaining about that.

When do they move on? I would love to learn more of their biology so that I can avoid them and reserve my lures for others....

At least it only claimed a lure.
This past weekend at the beach I hung on to one trying to get a fresh bucktail back. wound up getting stuck next to the 50 bridge, ray went under the boat next thing snap went the rod tip. I ended up hand lining it in, and got the lure back. Needless to say the cutters are coming out next time.

They're here to have their babies and to make new babies for the following year.

The article in the link below says they'll leave in the fall but it seems to me that they thin out considerably before then.

They're plentiful at the moment. I saw some at Hackett Point today.

Perhaps we are overlooking an obvious solution to overzealous rays. During this time of year, we could switch to wearing Ray Ban sunglasses.
