  • Noisy seat-2015 outback

So while the 2015 outback seat is super comfy, I've noticed that it can be quite noisy. I suspect that the fish can hear me coming. The source of the creaking and noise seems to be the plastic components of where the seat attaches to the plastic rod/support underneath.

Anyone have a suggestions for reducing or eliminating this?

I was thinking silicone spray, but don't want to use anything that might damage it over time...

Had same issue with the seat in my Predator. Used 303 Aerospace Protectant. West Marine has it. Use the stuff all over the kayak.

      Guys,
One of our team paddlers Joe Hosler had this issue as well and he solved it by using Marine grease. He Sprayed the entire seat down with silicone spray too. He used the grease on the teeth for the bar.

      Hope this helps

I had this issue too and found success with wd-40 on the metal parts of the seat and grease on the teeth on the bar

The noise, at least my noise, is coming from the bar that holds the seat down. Specifically the end square sides of the bar. It has a lot of play and goes back and forth as you peddle. I used a piece of a small zip tie (smallest they sell) and stuck the end peice in the gaps between the square end parts of the bar and cut the excess off. Noise is gone and the seating is more rigid than before. I suspect the gaps are to make it easy to raise and lower the bar, but I keep mine at one setting and the small zip ties keep it all rigid with some flexibility.

I don't really seem to have this problem with my seat. Maybe I just don't really notice it. I will see if I notice anything next time I go out.

If you have a noisy seat.. eat fewer beans.. that helps for me.

Finally got a chance to take pictures.

I have the zip tie pushed in a little more but had it sticking out slightly so it can be seen better for the pics. The bracket still has some wiggle room but not very loose like before.

Thanks Brother! Did your seat make noise right away, or after you had your kayak on the water a couple times?

I can't remember if I noticed it the first outing... Perhaps due to the blind love period Definitely noticed it by the third outing or so... So it was fairly early on.

The first thing I noticed is the plastic under the seat in the back isn't completely even so the rear of the seat wasn't completely flat... By that I'm literally talking about half a centimeter or so, but it was enough to bother me being brand new and all. I had put little pads under it and that fixed the uneven problem. That's when I realized that the noise wasn't coming from the back it was coming from the front.

Hobie does need a little better QA... Seems there are a lot of stories of these little blemishes... Still live the yak though!

Wow. I noticed some serious QA problems on the 2015 demo Outback that BYB first got. Hopefully they have fixed the problems by now. It was so bad on the demo I could see with the nekid eye that the seat mount for the front was at least 1/2" off front to rear, on one side vs the other.
