What does everyone use for a fish log.does anyone use a app or what

  • #2
I file pictures from each outing in a new folder with the launch location and date as the name of the folder. A log would do a better job with tracking details though.

Fishbrain is a good app. It's like instagram for fishing.

My brain! I used to keep a pretty extensive log when I was hunting flatheads a couple nights a week. Eventually, though, you realize that all you can do is use past experience to form your gameplan but you always have to adapt once you get on the water. I mean what information do you really need to know? I don't need to know that I caught six flatheads in July on the west bank of XYZ creek under a fallen oak tree as the barometric pressure was falling and the river was flowing at 3500 CFS. All I need to know is in the summertime when there's high water catfish tend to gather at creek mouths. Over a period of years you will see patterns emerge and the need for a detailed log diminishes greatly. I see a lot of OCD tendencies amongst kayakers for some reason so I'm interested to hear what kind of crazy things people have come up with.

I kind of agree with Romo. It might help to keep a log when you first start out, but after a few years you should notice the pattern. I keep a physical journal (so old fashioned) for the yellow perch and herring/shad spawning runs in the spring in southern maryland. I have about 10 years saved up now. Helps give me a reminder that going out in 40 degree temps in early February might be jumping the gun!

You all should check out Instagram. It's a social network that is soley based upon uploading pictures. I always upload pictures of my good ones. I know a couple other guys on here have em. Jet (correct me if I'm wrong) even runs the @snaggedline one. I know a lot of people find social media obnoxious, but instagram is HUGE in regards to fishing. It's easy to use, and pretty cool to check out who's getting what when. Kinda like a huge bragging board

Maybe it's the accountant in me... But I keep a simple excel spreadsheet with date, species caught, trip summary, lures/bait and weather/water conditions. I keep it mostly to remember past fishing trips, when I look back and reread a log from years ago it takes me back to the vivid memories of the trip. I've been doing this for almost 10 years now... I also like to keep track of the all the biggest of each type of fish that I catch each year. This reminds me that I'm several trips behind on updating my log....

                Ryan,

That's interesting. I'm a long ago Terrapin (U of M) accounting graduate and I do the same thing.

                  Guess I'm just old school.
To me, a fish log is that downed tree where I'm keep catching those fat bucketmouths.

I pretty much use this site to track the particulars of trips.

However, there is a site linked to below which is used by conservation groups and DNR to track the catches of recreational anglers using all modes; boat, kayak, and pier & surf. The hope is that regulation and conservation efforts will be enhanced if more anglers documented their catches there:

Last year at the CBKA tournament, we had a presentation by a researcher who was introducing a new smart phone app to track fishing catches. Here is a link to that app.

                        https://allianceforthebay.org/2015/0...-conservation/

I'm sure the research community would love to know where I caught each fish and how big it was. I personally do not choose to share that information with anyone outside my close circle of fishing buddies. For those of you who are heavy into social media and online apps, it may be something to consider.

It looks like Fishinfool and I were typing similar information at exactly the same time.

John, I don't share my catches either there, mainly because of the time involved with posting here and there.

I do wonder, as there are increasing pressures on fisheries going forward, if DNR won't at some point require every licensed fisherman to register their catches on a site of this type. Hopefully, not. There are also probably equally accurate ways to gather data on the health of a given fishery.
