  • heading north and looking for advice on leaders

I am heading north (CT, NY, MA) for about 10 days of mixed work and fishing. I am will be spending a chunk of time on my kayak on the north fork of Long Island near Orient Point. I expect to find lots of Rocks (the fish) among lots of large rocks (the structure) and toothy bluefish.

I plan on making my own leaders, but I am curious of the pros / cons of heavy flouro (50#) vs wire under these circumstances. I anticipate primarily using jig/plastics, tube & worm and bucktails with the odd xrap thrown in here and there.

    Thoughts?

As I recall from my years of living on the island, Orient Point has big rock and big sharks.

When tangling with blues, break out the wire. My first time fishing J-bay I used 80lb mono to make the rigs I was live lining bunker with, blues bit right through them. I don't think you should need anything for the tube and worm but otherwise I'd have at least a short steel leader on all my rigs. Good luck and enjoy the trip!
