  • Franklin Point State Park Soft Opening

    Hi all,

Franklin Point State Park between Shady Side and Deale in southern Anne Arundel County is now open for a "soft opening".

    http://dnr2.maryland.gov/publiclands...klinpoint.aspx

The hope is that paddlers with experience, safety gear and common sense will go try FPSP and help fine-tune the process before a formal announcement is made. There's a group of South County volunteers who have been working on this project for almost 20 years. Let's help them make this soft opening go well.

We're updating our water trail map to show that FPSP is open:

    www.aacwt.org/kayak/aawt/aawt.nsf/mainframe?openframeset&frame=docframe&src=%2fkayak %2faawt%2faawt.nsf%2f0%2fb9064e8fcce0331985257e5d0 00bff01%3fopendocument%26autoframed

Notice that once you leave Deep Creek you're right on the open Bay.

There are two gates at the Dent Road access point. The yellow first gate should be open. Then there's an open parking lot on the left, and so you shouldn't need the lock code if you only want to park and walk down to the water without a kayak. Then there's a brown gate that should be shut and locked. Get the lock code for the brown gate if you want to drive to the launch site and drop off your yak. After you drop off your boat, please park your car in the parking lot and lock the brown gate.

Go slow on Dent Road. It's rural, there are often kids playing and people jogging on the road and there's a blind corner 100 yards before the park entrance.

    See you on the water

      It's official!

Here's the flyer on the West Rhode Riverkeeper website:

It's a cool new thing, DNR having local volunteers and a Riverkeeper manage a state park.

Wanted to take a look since I'm always looking for protected areas near the bay. I will say its not the roomiest of launch areas with a tree overhead and a drag across a dirt and mulch path. There is parking for about 12 cars and a porta-john. A few pics of the area in case you are interested.Gate @ launch.jpgLaunch marker.jpgpath to launch.jpgTree @ launch.jpgWater @ launch.jpg
