Ventured out Saturday morning for my first open water kayak trip. Very interesting experience. My friend Doug and I put in at JGP. Wind was blowing but it was still manageable. Doug caught a 16" and a few dinks trolling just above the bridge. After about two hours of unsuccessful trolling I decided to try some top water plugging so I paddled over to the shore by the restaurant just below the bridge. There was a sailboat moored just off shore and I noticed a smaller boat right behind it. I didn't pay much attention to them and began fishing. On my first cast I caught an 18" and released him over the side. A few cast later I caught another 18". At that point the DNR boat that was behind the sailboat decided it was time to check me out. The first thing i'd like to say is that they were very polite and friendly. They asked how the fishing was going and if I had caught anything. I told them I had 2 at 18' and released them. Their next question seemed almost funny. Do you have a fishing license? The funny part was that I was sitting there with a couple of thousand dollars worth of kayak and gear and they wanted to know if I had a 5 dollar senior fishing license. I started to get it out to show them and they said that's ok they didn't need to see it. After that they said good luck fishing and thanks for wearing your vest.
The trip back to the launch was quite challenging. With a heavy wind in my face and several hours on the water to tire me out it took just about everything I had to get back. Trip ended safely and I had a great time so now i'm ready for my next trip as soon as I invest in some dry wear.
