  • New Person from Rockville MD ... Hello!

Happy Monday! I just joined and wanted to introduce myself and say Hi. I live in Rockville, MD and work in DC (horrible commute, yes I drive). I grew up surf fishing on the Jersey Shore (Monmouth County) for stripers and bluefish and fished there all my life (parents and sister still live there and I visit often). I am an avid surf fisherman, but looking to start kayak fishing in my home waters. Because of Hurricane Sandy, they have notched or got rid of most of the jetties that I have fished and also due to the sand replenishment a lot of structure is gone. Getting too old and tired to drive to NY, Conn, and RI (and NJ). I just came back from Block Island 2 weekends ago and spend 2 days fishing and got "skunked". The 9 hour drive back home killed me!

I'm interested in a Hobie Pro Angler 14 I think but maybe 12. I don't have a kayak yet, but wanted to join and get educated and see what my options are in this area. My biggest reason of joining this site is really to find like minded people to go with, if I get into Kayaking. Being a potential newbe kayaking, I'm really worried about safety.

I have an 2010 Nissan Xterra, wondering if people who might have the Xterra and a Hobie PA ... how hard is it to lift it up on the roof (and off), or if better to trailer it (more expensive route).

I will do a search as well to see what others have asked and so I don't ask questions that have been answered before.

    Best Regards,
    David

    Welcome ah bored.

There are lots of launches that are "car top" only, no trailers allowed. If you plan on hauling it on the roof of your vehicle, look into an Outback. I have a trailer for carrying two Outbacks (when my daughter fishes), but when I go by myself I put one on top of my Jeep.

Lots of good fishing in the local area, both fresh and salt.

      David,

Welcome to the forum and the hobby.

I also experienced the DC commute for a couple of years. Not a pleasant experience. I am making up for that now by spending as many enjoyable hours in my kayak as possible.

If you decide on a trailered kayak be aware that your launching options will be less than if you car-top your boat.

The biggest safety issues in my opinion are not dependent on the kayak you choose, but the decisions you make in it as to where and when you fish.

Good luck in your research and deliberations.

Welcome aboard! I would recommend attending the Meet & Greet down at Beverly Triton on 11/14. There you will be able to see a wide range ot boats and transportation options, as well as meeting a bunch of kayak fishing enthusiasts.

The details of the event are easily found by searching "Beverly"

Thank you for the greetings! ... I did not know about the limited launching options with the trailer, thank you for that info.

Cowpokey,I guess you would recommend the Outback over the PA 12 b/c it is lighter? Does that added stability of the PA12 offset the weight advantage of the Outback. would love to do the Beverly meet up, but have another commitment I cant get out of. How long do you all eat for? I can get there by 3pm ... might be too late.

Welcome to the board and soon to the addictive sport of kayak fishing. I have a hobie outback and love the thing it's stable and able to be car topped on either my suv or my sedan. The PA12/14 is a great fishing platform but I wouldn't even know where to begin car topping that thing. Definitely try both the Outback and PA out prior. I can say this it definitely takes alot to flip an Outback unless you are beach launching. Typically you will fall out of the kayak if anything happens at all. Good luck and let us know which route you go.

I can confirm this, I have witnessed it, and experienced it. Both occasions were because of shenanigans not stability of the kayak.

You guys are right ... it is about 25# difference between the two. I guess the only thing is if I were to launch it on the beach (out front if I bring it to) in NJ. But not sure how many times I would do that, especially by myself. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Welcome aboard. Check out Backyard Boats in Annapolis they have them all for test rides. That was my down fall I took the outback out for a test ride an took it home with me. Then I had another problem my son would not let me use it so I ended up getting myself the PA. They are both great boats.

Welcome aboard! I would also recommend the Outback, just for loading purposes. I have an SUV that I cartop with a Jbar style carrier and a load assist bar. I recently upgraded to a Thule Hullavator load assist system after a few failed loading attempts accompanied with some minor body damage (to myself and the vehicle). The system is pricey, but well worth it since I try and get on the water once a week yearly.

                      Hi David,
I have an xterra and an outback and it is tough getting it up on top. Can't imagine putting a PA up there. I think if you try the outback you will find it to be very stable. Rolled my previous trident 11 twice but have not even come close on the outback.

Welcome this was my rookie season. And I'm dreading winter. If you are into bass fishing check out some of the tournament circuits like the MAKBF MID ATLANTIC KAYAK BASS FISHING SERIES, it is a great way to get out and meet people. Don't worry about the tournament part as much....just come out fish new locations and meet people!
