  • Weight of jig head, launched out of Jonas 11/20

Went out today and battled the elements trolling. Caught one 17 inch in 2 hours of hard pedaling. Thinking its time to start changing tactics. I have no experience bottom jigging, but have a sense of it. Would like to know the recommended jig head weight and what kind of plastic to attach and any other suggestions. As always the advice is greatly appreciated.

The weight of your jig head varies according to the current and depth of the water. You want to use the lightest jig head you can that enables you to feel the bottom. Bkd's, bass assassin's, Gulp and various paddle tails all work. You might want to pick up a copy of Shawn Kimbro's Chesapeake Light Tackle.

With the fish moving into deeper water you need heavier jig heads for trolling. In 20' you might need an ounce or more to get deep enough, but at other times 1/2 might work. For vertical jigging I've used 3 oz in 35' and had difficulty getting it to the bottom with the current. It really is situational and there is no one universal answer that can answer your question. Bring a variety of sizes and be willing to change out until you get the depth the fish are hanging out in.
