What knife do you carry?

At the end of last year I decided that I needed to have a knife as a back up cutter/ emergency tool on my pfd. Sometimes I feel that a lot of people over look this item on a kayak. Now dont get me wrong I keep a zinger with a line cutting tool on it, but like the security of a back up in case It breaks or falls off. So long story short I picked up a cheap Buck bones tanto blade. I expect it to last at least a season or 2 with care. Just curious if anyone has other recommendations from what has worked for them.

I carry the sad remains of the first "nice" pocket knife I ever bought, a CRKT M16. It is in pretty sad shape, but works great as my yak knife.

I like the looks of that, might have to get one myself.

I use a SOG Seal Pup which I like because of the protective coating on the blade, but this is even better.

The Spyderco Salt series is made of some special H1 stainless that resist salt corrosion, and it seems to work. It is into year 3 with no rust. The only negative is the fact that it is SLIGHTLY harder to sharpen. Which is probably related to the H1 alloy.

Benchmade 5 hook. Attaches right to my PFD. Unbreakable and extremely sharp. Obviously it isn't a bait knife and is make to use in the event of an emergency, such as getting tangled in line or needed to quickly cut an anchor rope. It is also a bottle opener which is pretty handy if you bring a beer or two along. For cutting bait I use the cheapest knife I can find because its used to cut nasty dead bunker. I do carry a Leatherman tool in my hatch that has a blade. I've never used the knife. I carry it mainly for the screw drivers and pliers which I have used.

When I lived in SC I used to fish a lot of jetties and inlets with swift current during the tide changes. So swift in fact that I was unable to paddle against the current on several occasions. One occasion in particular I almost flipped my kayak after my anchor dug in simultaneously after a wave came over the tail end of my kayak completely flooding the back of the boat. I still to this day do not know how it didn't go over, but I held on long enough to pull my knife from the front of my pdf and cut the anchor line ending the flood situation. I use the same knife to cut bait and kill bigger fish I planned on keeping so they aren't flopping around making noise. It's not something that is necessary very often, but when it is it sure is important!

It's sold as a neck knife but the sheath come with a u type clip that it can be attached to the sheath and that will span a strap. Keep it attached right to my pfd with the handle pointing down and the sheath retention has never failed me. Nice to know if I go over and there are any lines complicating a self rescue they can be dealt with. Sheathe has plenty of attachment holes and could be easily attached anywhere on the kayak, seat, basket, tackle box, etc.

Also keep one of these clipped on to an eyelet or somewhere else near at hand on the kayak itself. Sanrenmu 7049 LTE-PN For $9 is a great knife and is holding up well to the saltwater after a summer of use. The carabiner clip makes it very handy on the water.

You may notice I don't like real pointy blades while on the kayak. BTW I don't want to get anybodies hackles up but Sarenmu, Ganzo and Enlan are making some very nice knives that can be had dirt cheap. The clip on one I have still looks new after sitting in puddles of saltwater, can't say the same for some of my more expensive knives and pliers.

I agree, I really don't use them that much when fishing but sure can see the times that they could be needed bad. Rope, lines and boats can do some strange things. The one time I did turtle had lines and leaders from three rods, paddle leash and a couple other miscellaneous leashes all around me. Felt kind of like a fly in a web. Didn't need to cut anything that particular time but if conditions were worse or a leg or arm wrapped in a anchor line was causing issues it's nice to know a knife is handy.
