I have destroyed several crkt knives on the kayak over the years either by never rinsing them off or by dropping them in the drink. I now carry a mora knife in my crate for cutting up bunker or gutting a fish and its scary sharp. I'm 3 seasons in with my current one and its still sharp and mostly rust free. It's cheap and totally worth it. The sheath isn't the greatest if you plan on putting it on your pfd.

I have a Wenoka dive knife on my vest. I use it mostly to cut the leader with a shark or ray, and for emergency. I have a cheap separate bait knife to use on the nasty stuff, plus it is a lot cheaper to replace if I lose it overboard. And I am never without a Swiss Army knife.

Just remember whatever you choose the two things I would recommend are 1) keep it on your PFD so you have it when you need it. This is not the time to have to dig around for it in your other gear. 2) whatever style you choose keep it as sharp as you can and if sharpening is not something you are good at find someone that can make it "Scary Sharp" for you. I use two on board with me, one is just for line, bait and general stuff. The other is strictly for Emergency Use.

I picked up one of these last summer: http://www.nrs.com/product/2755/nrs-...knife-closeout
Attaches to my PFD lash tab very securely, and the sheath holds the knife very securely until needed. When released it basically pops off into the palm of your hand. Very pleased with it...

            This! http://www.leatherman.com/charge-tti-7.html

I love my knife. It's pricey but it has everything I could need while out there. So if I want to pack light but have whatever I need in an emergency (Like if my fish finder cabling needs work :-) I've got it.

This is great, didn't expect this much feedback since I've never seen this topic come forth. It really is great to see all the different carry options! Most Google searches will turn up a NRS co pilot. While a great knife I was really amazed at all the vast prices and tools we all carry. I really appreciate all this feedback.

I found this knife on amazon. Been using it in salt water for the past two years. It has a few rust spots on it but it's held up pretty well for a $10 knife. After each trip I rinsed it thoroughly and sprayed it down with WD40. It comes with a hard plastic sheath and has rubber straps. I usually wear it around my calf. It was also surprisingly sharp. I've used it mainly as a bait knife and haven't had to sharpen it yet.
