Can any of you help me understand how far up the bay I can fish on a Va salt license? Guess I'm making it harder than what it is but don't want to show up somewhere and get a nice surprise. I've read the dnr stuff but to me some of its pretty vague. Thanks
This is a little clearer than what I had found earlier.
    Reciprocal Recreational Saltwater Fishing Licenses:

Chesapeake Bay and Seaside*- Anglers with saltwater licenses from either Virginia or Maryland may fish in any portion of the Chesapeake Bay, or any of the saltwater reaches of its tributary rivers, as well as seaside bays and creeks and the Atlantic Ocean where a Virginia saltwater license is required.*Virginia licenses honored include: 1) individual annual licenses; 2) individual temporary licenses; 3) private boat licenses covering all persons fishing on the boat; 4) annual licenses for charter boats, headboats, and partyboats; and 5) annual licenses for rental boats.

Looks like I'm safe on the flats if I go up there. Heck, maybe I can make it a two day trip. One not so early in the day in Annapolis then head north that evening and be bright eyed and bushy tailed next morning for the flats. Let's see how the wife reacts to this.

I live in HDG and more than likely will be going out Sat. and Sunday. For sure on Sunday as Sat. I have to be at work at 3pm.

I am planning on going out Sunday either Sandy Point or Triton with little expectations of monsters. Just checking out the "local" scene. I would imagine boat traffic on the flats will be congested becareful up there and get some cows!

I'll be going out of Cape St. Claire (Little Magothy) into the bay off of Sandy Point to fish for rock on Sunday. Private launch, but we could always shuttle cars using my sticker.

Is there an area close by Jonas Green to park a kayak trailer?

I'm trying to decide where to put in on Sunday too... I'm guessing Sandy Point will be insane but I haven't ruled it out. I've never put in at Jonas Green and gone out towards the bay for striper. How far/bad is that paddle? I haven't explored too much down by the academy...

Ok, I don't have a definite place to be. Being the distance I have to go I think I might hit the Annapolis area Saturday and hit some tackle shops first to get some gear (need some help). Fish the rest of the day then head north afterwards. Get motel and be ready to get game on for the flats !! Might get skunked but if I can hook up with some guys here its worth it. What do I need for lures? Just started last fall. I have Alan's trolling gear and jig heads with skirts and bkd's. Let me know what else I need. Can't wait to meet you all ! !!

About a quarter mile up the hill on Rt 450 is the WW II memorial. They have a parking lot there. I don't know of any other spot nearby.

There is no need to go all the way to the bay from Jonas Green (2.2 miles to Greenbury Pt, the northern point of the river mouth -- much farther out to the main bay channel). Over the past two days, I caught 22" fish and a bunch of others from 18"-20" in the following river segments: a) downstream of the Rt 450 bridge, but still in the river, b) between the bridges, c) above the Rt 50 bridge. You need to spend some time searching, but they are there. There are probably some larger ones too.

If you are looking for fun pullage and not dead set on catching a large keeper, consider staying in more sheltered waters. All fish were caught on 1/2-3/4 ounce jigheads and 3" to 6" paddletails. I trolled yesterday in a pedal kayak and today in a paddle kayak.

Ok. Does anyone fish the afternoon around Annapolis? If so where. Next, Sunday at the flats? If I stay up there Sat. Night then where should I look to launch? I'm coming but trying to get my p's and q's together. What lures etc... Damn I'm ready !!

I mentioned in my last paragraph what I use. You can also get my book "Fishing in the Comfort Zone" available on Amazon or at local tackle shops (Angler's, Marty's, Tochterman's, and Clyde's). I describe my light tackle trolling methods there. They are similar to Alan's but we each do things our own way. I use only jigheads or bucktails with soft plastics. I do not use hard plastic crankbaits and swimming plugs, lprimaril because I do not like treble hooks or multiple hooks on the same lure body.

I am a crankbait fan...XRaps, Crystal Minnow, Stretch 25's....On the big baits I replace the VMC trebles with in line VMC single needle point hooks...and I troll, troll and troll some more...most trips I log 15-17 miles on my GPS...75% or more of my kayak fishing is spent trolling- it is my preferred method of fishing...during spring trophy season I usually mix my rigs- a double jighead Fat Sam 5 inch Pearl or chartreuse mullets on one rod and the other has a big crankbait...
