  • Starting out

    Hello everyone,
I am planning on going out this Monday (07/18/2011) morning with my buddy. We started fishing from our kayaks about 2 months ago in the Patapsco River and the local reservoirs. Now we are going to try Sandy Point at the bridge or go over to Kent Island from the Romancoke pier off Rt. 8. Which would be a better choice or would you have other suggestions for two beginners? We will be using Bass Pro FS12T SOT. Thank you for any suggestions or guidance provided to this novice.

    What are you targeting?

Bottom fishing for perch, Spot, Croakers could be good off Romancoke. Look for depth changes and channel edges in the 12 ft to 30ft area. I don't know that area but if there is an oyster bar (Look for the marked white buoys) that's always a good place to try.

Live lining or jigging the Bay Bridge has been picking up. There are catching some good size stripers off the pylons.

I definitely wouldn't mind catching a rockfish or two. I just wasn't sure about starting off in one of those two places in the kayak, being new to this type of fishing.

Not sure, but I may make it on Monday for awhile too. I nailed large fat croakers at Romancoke. Unlike Hemmingways, Romocoke cost $10 per vehicle to launch. There are bathrooms and a kayak/canoe launch from a ramp to a small sandy area. Pinch is right, it depends what you are targeting. If you want jumbo spot and big croakers, and some perch, then the coke it is. If you want rocks, then you have a better chance at the bridge, even though you can catch them at the coke like Surf said. I did go out with Pinch today on the bridge, but we could not catch a rockfish. Maybe the weather front that came through shut them down. The bridge also seemed devoid of a large presence of spots to live line. We only caught mostly perch today.

Good luck wherever you go, if its a nice day and you want to get wet, self rescue can be a good thing to practice. I might hit the Bridge tomorrow evening, but deffinately going out of Romancoke or Matapeake on Sunday..haven't decided which yet.

My buddy and I met up with Moc Monday morning and went to Romancoke. Moc showed us a couple of ways to set up our rods and away we went. I kept 4 nice croakers and 2 perch and threw back a small rock and 4 or 5 small perch. Moc was on fire, every time I looked over at him he was pulling in a fish. I think he kept 8 and threw back at least double that. Saw Pinch and Matt out there trying their luck with jigs (not sure of the outcome). I had a blast and thanks for the info and tips Moc.

It was fun to go out fishing with you and your "wingman". We should do it again sometime. I posted a report with a few pics from our outing under Snaggedline's boatyard section. Good luck with outfitting your new kayaks.
