It does "shoot out really far, to where the fish are". I don't see how you could go wrong with one of these.

I saw someone who had one of these on sunday but it was too windy
to use it well.... but I could see how it would work to get your bait further out.

Dicks sporting goods has these. I almost bought one for my little dude since he is only 2 yrs old. He likes "shooter guns" and fishing. Plus I wouldn't have to worry about teaching a free-wielding 2 year old how to cast a hook.
