  • Brunswick Md area Potomac

Hey anyone more familiar with this area? I am going to be camping there at the beginning of August and from what I have been told there is some decent small mouth fishing there. I have not fished that particular part but looking for any advice.

    Thanks guys.

I fish above there, just above Harpers Ferry, and it is good smallmouth fishing in that area. There are several people on the forum that have fished the Brunswick area. You can put in down near the rail yards. There is a park in that area.

Cool, we are staying at the campground right there and I plan on taking the yaks up below point of rocks and then floating back. Any tips on lures for that area? Planned on taking jigs and some soft plastic worms. Maybe some small spinners.

Small spinners will work. I have always had good luck with tubes. In the past few years I have been using the coffee tubes. I like the smoke color with glitter. There is also a shad color that works well. Small crankbaits also work. I like the redeye shad, made by Strike King Lures. I have also used rubber worms with luck. The only problem with the worms is that you have to really slow down, when with the other lures you can cover more water.

I sometimes will use live shinners. That is deadly. I just put them on a hook under a small bobber. However, use circle hooks or you will gut hook alot of fish. With live shinners, a 30+ fish day is quite common.

Awesome info thanks. I may have to try the shiners. Do you catch them there with a cast net or buy them? If I remember right there is a bait shop at the ferry.

I generally buy mine. Regular minnows work also, but the shinners are the best. Regular minnows are easier to catch, with a wire trap. You can use the clear soda bottle type minnow trap with pretty good luck for shinners. I will set a few of those when I go, in case I run out of shinners. You can make your own traps out of 2L soda bottles. So if you lose some, no great loss.

            Good Luck.

Very good idea,I lost my last trap at deep creek, well left it. I will make some more as we will be there 5 days or so. Thanks again for all the info.

+1 on tubes. I've had decent success and caught my biggest smallies with dark colored tubes. Use a jig head that has a wire weed guard. Bounce it along the bottom in fast water where the current comes around downstream island points, boulders and ledges. Thoroughly check out any pools below where the river elevation drops a bit. Good luck!

I fish just a little west of there and if you ever get out to Washington county give me a shout.

Spinners and spinner baits in the rapids. I add mister twister and 1/2 worm trailers. Jigs in the slower spots.

                    Good luck

September might not be good for me, always. Notice the Avatar, I might be on the river, but not fishing.

You can only fishing on Sundays though.

I live about 20 minutes from Point of Rocks so I drift from the Brunswick area few times a year. I always use the same lures, simply because they always work for me. Zoom Dead Ringer 4 inch worms or Zoom 5 inch Lizards. I rig these with a split shot about 12 inches up the line and a standard offset shank worm hook. Cast upstream and retrieve just fast enough to keep up with the current. I pull in the most fish on the worms. Chartruese Flake and Watermelon seed always seem to work well. I've tried other brands of small worms but they just don't produce like to Zoom Dead Ringer. I think it has something to do with the rings that go around the body. I beleive they hold air and give off bubbles.
