  • Review of new sun protection product

I have posted before about my sensitivity to the sun and the several skin cancers I have had. Three years ago I began to take sun protection seriously and bought a facial shield (often referred to as a buff). With the first shield I purchased, I was frustrated by frequent heavy fogging of my sunglasses caused by my exhalations moving up through the shield and onto the glasses. In 2014, I found a company that made a shield that had a mesh patch over the nose and mouth area. The mesh allowed exhalations to exit and not pass up through the shield. This reduced fogging noticeably. That company was called Breathes Like a Fish. I think they are now part of the Gillz company.

I have used the vented shield on almost every trip for the past two years. I like the protection but find that it does not always stay in place and requires periodic readjustment.

Over the winter I received several Cabelas catalogs in the mail. Cabelas introduced new facial shields (they call them gaitors) and a full balaclava in their Guidewear series that also incorporate a mesh breathing section. I visited the Cabelas store in Delaware in late March. The product was so new that it was not yet stocked in the store. I purchased the balaclava online. I tried it several times at home and was pleased. This morning I wore it in the Florida heat and sun for 5 hours while kayak fishing for specs. The balaclava worked very well and kept nearly all of my face covered. It required no periodic adjustment. The light fabric was not uncomfortable. I was able to wear a regular ball cap over the balaclava rather than my other hat with a neck flap. With the steady breeze this morning, I had no issues with fogging. The mesh patch is a tighter weave than the one on my other facial shield. On a day without breeze, it is likely to have some potential for fogging.

I can recommend the Cabelas balaclava as an effective sun protection screen. I believe that Cabelas offers lifetime warranties on their Guidewear products. (Disclosure: I have no financial interest in any of the mentioned products.)

P.S. - fishing was slow today on a grass flat near the mouth of Tampa Bay. I caught a 20.5" spec on topwater early in the morning, but only a few other small specs after that

Thanks John. I don't wear my buff as much as I should from fogging and heat. I'll look into this even though it makes you look like you're going to knock over a 7-11

Thanks John, how is it on the back of the neck, this is where I always have a problem with these covers.

        John,

Glad you found a product with adequate sun protection that's comfortable.

Just don't wear it in the TSA line at the airport when you catch your flight home!

        Good luck tomorrow.

I find it to be comfortable. It is not as clingy as the regular facial shields.

A few years ago the Ac went out in the warehouse that I work in. Myself and a few coworkers got these to keep us cool. I've owned a buff brand buff for a few years but it was always to hot. With the mission buff I have found my glasses don't fog up as much as with the old style buff I had. Also when it gets really hot mid day I pour water on the mission buff and it has the cooling affect. The only place I've found this is a bed bath and beyond in the blue or pink colors. But bed bath you can use a 20 percent off coupon to knock the price down. The only downside that I will say is that on each end there is a elastic band that I wont say is overly tight but it is noticeable over a few hours of wearing the buff. Hands down having that cooling affect makes me always bring it with me on the water. PS don't dunk it in the water your paddling in, bring a extra bottle of water.

Thanks for the write up John.
Several years ago I got burned real bad from the sun and now take it very seriously. I use a wide brimmed hat when fishing but have been looking for face and hand protection. I wear long pants (a nylon fabric) and long sleeve shirts (that tight swim shirt type stuff). I would love to hear what you have found for a cool but protective shirt and hand protection (I get the weirdest sun lines on my hands). And leg protection if you have anything special for that.

P.S. thanks for a great post. I will definitely look into both these products you discuss.

Pat - I wear long-sleeve button-down fishing shirts over top of a cotton T-shirt. I know that synthetic fiber shirts (technical shirts) are quite popular, but they don't fit my body well. I like lots of shirt pockets, especially a zipper pocket where I keep my phone.

I like the Cabelas sun gloves (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabel...B&gclsrc=aw.ds), but am currently wearing a pair of Buff gloves with tarpon scale pattern that my daughter gave me. The only space that is not covered is my ankles (the gap between my long fishing pants and the old sneakers I wear). I try to give that area a good coating of sunscreen before heading out.

Many thanks John for the information as I too had some issues with some cancerous spots on the ears and it's now always on my mind year around outdoors.

                        John,
Looks good. I may pick one up for myself. I have a Buff-brand face shield right now but, like you, have found that I need to constantly readjust it in places where the fabric has moved out of place (like at the base of my neck).
I'm curious, what does Cabelas recommend when it comes to washing and maintaining the garment? Can I throw it in a washing machine or does it need to be hand-washed?
                        Thanks.

I recently picked up these http://www.basspro.com/World-Wide-Sp...duct/10213717/ I have had them out once so far. They do the trick of protecting my fee from the sun and a more comfortable than a regular shoe/boot might be. I am happy with them for $29

The tag reads: "Machine wash cold normal cycle. Do not bleach, tumble dry, low heat, avoid fabric softeners, do not iron, do not dry clean".

At home I toss it in the washer with medium heat. I usually hang it up to dry, but would not hesitate to use a dryer (even at high heat). Just minutes ago, I returned to my hotel from this morning's Tampa Bay fishing. I mixed up some shampoo and water in the sink and hand washed my fishing pants, balaclava, and gloves. They are sitting on the patio out side of my room drying in the sun.
