Story has it that he caught it after weigh stations were closed. The 12hrs was overnight.

The exact same thing happened to Elvin Hooper- He was fishing a Penn Long Beach 65 with 25 pound test pink Ande on a 10 foot Hatteras Heaver with a big hunk of cut mullet hooked and landed a red drum on the Rodanthe fishing pier after the pier house closed- 7 hours later it weighed 90 pounds on the pier scales but they weren't "certified" so he drove it to the Red Drum tackle shop in Hatteras where it weighed 88 pounds, still a world record but...it lost several pounds laying on the pier all night-
