The bait shop up there has everything you should need, so that's an option too. It's actually a very nice tackle shop with many high end reels and rods.
I think Walmart has Zara Spooks and Cotton Cordell pencil poppers if you get in a jam. There is a walmart when you make the turn off the parkway to head east over the bay. I think the town is called Woodbridge, NJ if you want to stop on the way in. We'll definitely have loaners and can help you out if needed. Wire is a good idea and zman's for the win!
Fluke (flounder to us), pronounced FLOOOOK by the northern tribe, are in season this year so make sure you bring some bucktails with smaller hooks like a spro so you can catch them. Also bring pliers and fish grips to deal with the blues and sea robins, aka crab dragons.
I will be there about 2pm Wednesday to prefish the bay. and then roll in bright and early as they open the camping area for Thursday so I can get a spot and get situated and start fishing again.
Silasvirus, his father in law, and myself, should be there mid day Thursday, just in time to setup our campsites and get some afternoon/evening fishing in.
okay I got a few 3/8ounce bucktails, 2 super spooks, and another pencil popper. as well as some wide gap hooks to throw the paddletail and hogys with. regardless what the outcome I think this trip is gonna be awesome. if I catch just one fish itll be a great day lol. I may have to catch a few flounder on the downtime if the legal ones are in range and grill em up
A few questions.....is Jbay about 20 feet deep or less? I'm wondering if my normal anchor line will be enough. Also, for the guys that manage to get a few rockfish every year, are you mostly getting them on the snagged bunker, or are they also hitting the normal trolled/casted baits like the zmans or tube n worms?
There are some deep areas/channel, but most of the time I've caught fish in more shallow area. I've never anchored there (nor can I recall seeing anyone anchoring). The effective methods for me have been trolling, following schools of blues and nailing them on top water, or chasing pods of bunker. For fluking...its always a drift.
