2017 MD Rockfish Regulation and Wind Question

IMO wind is the hardest weather factor for meteorologists to predict. 5kts of wind with waves 1ft or less is a great forecast, but don't be surprised if that prediction is off when you get on the water.

As it turns out, wind is actually one of the easiest for a meterologist to predict. I work with one and I was surprised to find that out. The weather is difficult, and it's best to predict the same area for a long period of time so that they can get accustomed to how different air masses react over the same terrain.

As for wind, it depends on direction. In open water, I don't like to fish in winds over 10 mph. It can really create a problem for kayaks. On boats, you can deal with more. In protected areas I've fished in 20-30 mph winds with no issue.

Funny, I had weather guys in my unit for many years and they would admit to me that the wind speed was always tricky to get exact.
Wind Direction, yes, that was "easy", (to your point about air masses) but predicted wind speed could vary by a number of knots.
In the case of this posting, a predicted 5kt wind speed forecast could easily become a 10kt breeze or a dead calm during forecasted time. The point being that in this case a mere 5kt difference would be a 100% deviation from what was predicted.
