  • Hello Everyone

    Hi Guys,

First time poster here - Robbie from VA told me to check the forums out and it looks like there's a lot of helpful posts.

I'm a 31 year old guy who lives in Reston, VA, is working on a startup software company with some friends, and loves to fish. Just recently found out about kayak fishing, and bought a Jackson Coosa and have had some fun with it down in Albemarle Sound at the Outer Banks, the James River, some lakes in Fairfax. I'm REALLY excited for fall when I hear the salt fishing starts picking up.

I'm focusing mostly on fly fishing now (have a 5 and 8/9 weight), but I do have a few spin rods that I like to play with as well.

Looking forward to reading and posting here!

    -Nick

Welcome Rob- I looked hard at the Coosa before I bought the OK Prowler- my only concern with it was how it would handle salt water as far as paddling speed - It looks like a terrific river and sound boat- love the ability to stand and especially the seating-

Welcome! Tons of info here and a great bunch. Check out the meet and greet threads. And there's quite a few NoVA guys here as well. I'm just south of you in Fairfax. Several of us have been hitting Pohick Bay Regional Park lately for LM bass and "Potomac Pike" aka Northern Snakehead. Some good fishing...

Hey sorry -wanted to clarify - my name's Nick, the guy who told me about this is Robbie.

Ronault - I had similar concerns - It's definitely not as sleek as some, but even on a relatively windy day in the sound I didn't have too hard of a time getting where I wanted to go. For open water fishing though, or to cover large distances, something like a Hobie would be sweet.

jffoley - I've heard about that spot and I'd love to go. Is there a meetup planned to hit it again? If you're ever headed out and wouldn't mind showing a new guy around, send me a message.

              Thanks all!

Welcome, I have been reading about the Coosa wondering how it would work on the Bay, if you are using it down near the Outer Banks it must be ok!

Yeah, I've never been out on the bay, but I imagine it's probably similar to the sound in terms of wind / wave dynamics. When the wind really kicked up paddling was a bit of a chore, but even with it being my first time on big water, I was fine. Definitely has a bit of a wind profile though, especially with the seat in the raised slots, so you need a good anchor to sit still if that's your goal. Overall very happy though - tons of little features that make fishing easier. It was designed from scratch for / by fishermen.

Jackson supposedly has two new models they are in the process of designing the Big Tuna and another name I can't think of off the top of my head. Supposedly designed for more bay/offshore fishing. Seems like they are doing well and keeping up with the Big Time Companies.

                          Hi Robbie;

Welcome. I am also new to the forum. The short time I have been a member, I have learned a lot and received a lot of help from the friendly folks on this forum. Even though I paddle a canoe, these guys welcomed me with open arms and made me fell like part of the group.

I havn't had the pleasure or fun of fishing with them yet but I looking forward to the time when I do. I still need more paddle time with the canoe before I feel comfortable going out with the group. I would probably slow them down and not be able to keep up. A few more trips on my own and I should be good to go.

Have you done any fishing around the CBBT off the VA tip of the Eastern Shore ? A friend of mine has a summer home down there and fishes it for flounder, strippers, trout, croakers, white perch and big spot. He runs a 22' Whaler and twin outboards. He always tells me about the big flounder he catches but he has never invited me to go fishing with him.

bhdpal - Nope, never have fished down there. Honestly I never even knew that existed, but now looking at it on Google Maps I have to say "wow" that is HUGE!

I'll have to head down that way some time

                              Flyinyak,
Welcome. Most of my yak fishing is in the rivers of WV, The Coosa is on the top of my list. But I just started fishing the bay, so I needed a "all around" yak, one that would handle the bay and still run Smoke Hole Canyon.
