  • St Mary's Get Together Part Deux

Really enjoyed our last get together for slower lower folks so decided to do it again. Saturday, August 12 at Piney Point ramp, 5:45 launch. High tide is a little after 5 that day so we will have a nice falling tide throughout the morning. All species should be in play, stripers, trout, drum, and bluefish. Caught my first needlefish of the year this week so maybe some poor soul can have that pleasure as well. And no, you don't need to be from the slower lower to join us.

Mostly casting, trolling works too, but it is mostly casting...Redfish or red drum take a pretty wide variety of lures...gold spoons, bucktails, swim baits, XRaps, even walk the dog top water lures...

For the drum we are targeting grassy shorelines and casting paddletails and super sized bettle spins (there are many other options, just what we've been using). We will occasionally pick them up just straight trolling but more effective when casting to spots. I've been catching a few small ones when bottom bouncing Gulp for croaker. Trout will hit trolled paddletails in many of the same situations as stripers. Grassy edges and sand flats between the grass often hold them and we will cast into those spots if we're targeting them. Trout seem to bite best for us when current is ripping and places that concentrate the current can be very effective.

What about Gulp shrimp?? How would they do?? I live 2.5-3 hours from there, it's tempting.

The Gulp shrimp do great in Florida and other areas with large shrimp hatches...we do better matching the hatch with minnow imitators...I used Gulp shrimp last year on a popping cork...pretty much like I would in South Carolina...I caught three croakers in two hours...pretty dismal..
