I'll have to try it without the top. I never thought too much about airflow. I was thinking of drilling a few holes in the lower portion of the bucket to dunk them occasionally. Maybe just leaving the top off and keeping them cool and out of water like you mention would be best.

Anyone use handlines from a kayak?

      Best crab traps?

I have crabbed for years, but usually do it with my father in law and we use a trot line. What is the best type of trap when using the yak. Do the open traps work well? The regular square traps seem like they would take up alot of room.

Have you guys ever thought about dropping some traps while at the BB. Fish the pilings and come back for the traps?

You can put broom sticks in the flush mount rod holders and stack traps on the broom sticks. I carry 12 traps that way. I also keep the crabs in a cooler in the rear cargo area. However, don't put the crabs directly on the ice or they will die. I use a few pieces of dry deck over the ice, card board will work.

I think the biggest problem about trying to crab right by the bay bridge would be all the boat traffic. Somebody would probably hit your traps. I know there are crabs around there because they are on the pilings a lot.

The broom stick idea is brilliant! I may have to use that and add a few more traps to my arsenal. I always put the crabs right on top of frozen water bottles and I've never lost any. However, if you use regular ice they would die if sitting in the melted ice water.

There's always crab traps on the way out to he bridge along the rock wall. I figure they would mind a few more?

dont get too close to the comm. crab pots they will get very angry with you which is not good when in a yak. crabbed over in crab alley behind KI couple weeks ago a lot of small males and quite a few females. crabbing probably better on the west side of the bay.
