I enjoy catching new species and lots of different species. Last year I caught 48 different species and added 8 new ones in 2017. My life total (at least as many as I can remember) is 102 species. It gets harder each year to add new species, unless you travel to new locations. It still is a challenge that is enjoyable for me. In 2018 I will work on my yearly species count and look to find some new ones too.
When fishing locally, I tend to get complacent and fish near home in the same spots. I hope I can force myself outside of my "Fishing Comfort Zone" and look for new spots and new approaches.
In a more lighthearted vein -- last summer and fall, I had a prolonged slump during which I was consistently outcaught by the guests fishing with me on my Scout center console (the "Small but Perky"). When that happens occasionally, I figure it is due to chance. When it happens repeatedly, it outlines a trend. To my 2018 fishing guests on my Scout - watch out. Your days of outcatching the captain are numbered.John Veil
