  • Looking for a fishing partner on a British Columbia sturgeon trip

This post is a bit unusual for this board. But perhaps someone out there is interested in a bucket list fishing trip.

I need to travel to Vancouver, BC for business meetings on June 6 and 7. I discovered that several companies offer sturgeon charter trips out of Chilliwack -- about 2 hours away. I booked a charter with Chromer Sport Fishing on June 5. http://vancouverfishingtrips.com/fra...rgeon-fishing/.

None of my regular fishing partners can join me. At this point I am paying for the full charter myself ($750 Canadian, plus tip, licenses, rental car, and two extra hotel nights). I would be happy to bring one or two other anglers with me to share the costs, but will make the trip by myself if nobody else can join me.

This is not kayak fishing -- it involves fishing from a small jet boat with its own guide. From what I understand, this is bait fishing with the opportunity to catch large sturgeon (see the photos on the Chromer website). I have always been intrigued by the prehistoric-looking sturgeon. Years ago DC utility PEPCO raised sturgeon at the Hallowing Pt marine laboratory near the Chalk Point power station. I visited that facility and got to hold the baby sturgeon. I am now ready to catch a fully grown sturgeon on rod and reel.

If anyone is interested in joining me on this trip, please contact me by pmail. I plan to fly in to Vancouver on the afternoon of June 4 and drive to Chilliwack that evening. I would return to Vancouver on June 6 by early afternoon. Chromer also offers salmon fishing trips leaving from Vancouver. I do not plan to do a salmon trip, but anyone else already there could choose that as another fishing option.

I ended up making the British Columbia sturgeon trip by myself yesterday. The good news is that I caught a new species. The bad news is that it was a 10" baitfish (pike minnow) and not a sturgeon.

The area was beautiful with wooded hills next to the river and snow-capped peaks in the distance. But the fishing flat out sucked yesterday. In 8 hours of fishing with prime baits in areas that had produced well over the past week, we got one bite that quickly came unhooked and we no caught fish. I am quite disappointed to have such a poor catching day after traveling this far. The sturgeon bucket on my fishing bucket list remains unfilled.

I'm sorry to hear this, John.

Far away or close to home.

The bad reports just keep coming.
