  • Intro/fishing report

    Hey folks,

Trapped inside by the rain I figured it was high time to make my first post. I joined the forum earlier this summer but have been jammed up on time and only made it out to fish a handful of times. I live in Calvert Co. and typically paddle the Patuxent and surrounding areas. I work at NSWC Carderock and would like to hit the upper Potomac some evenings in the future as well. It looks like a few guys from the forum fish there with some regularity. I have a Current Designs Storm SIK which is an awesome boat for touring (I recommend it to anyone in the market) but not ideal for fishing in terms of usable space/maneuverability. I recently cut and stained some 3/4" plywood to attach to the deck to serve as a work space and a mounting area for a depth finder and rod holder. I wanted to make this configuration adjustable and removable since I use the boat strictly for touring on other occasions, although I'm becoming more and more reluctant to ever hit the water without a rod these days. On the maiden voyage of this setup I hooked up with a cat on the Patuxent just north of Kings Landing Park with a bottom rig along a dropoff in about 20' of water. This happened on Tuesday just before the tremor (when the quake went through I foolishly thought some creature was lurking just below my transducer and bumping the boat, so I continued paddling unaware). Pictures are attached if I can figure that out. Unfortunately, my fishing season on the Bay will be cut short this year since I have to return to Pittsburgh for my last semester at Pitt. On a related note...if anyone has fishing tips relevant to that area I'd appreciate any input. I look forward to coming back next spring in earnest and will enjoy reading up on everyone's adventures through the fall.

ps. I now realize that some parts of this post could be more appropriate in the boatyard forum and other part are more pertinent to the dry dock section...sorry 'bout that.

pps. In the photo you'll notice the precarious use of duct tape as a temporary means of attaching the velcro that the FF unit sticks to. I mounted the unit to a separate piece of plywood so I can move it around until I figure out where I want it permanently. Don't worry, I'm not trusting my investment entirely to the miracle adhesive strips.

Welcome! I haven't fished that river yet, probably should sometime soon since it's been years since I've caught catfish.
