        Brian is right. You can negate that somewhat by tying a horizontal loop of heavy mono on the back of the hook that creates a support for the tailing material so that it doesn't drop into the hook gap. This is a technique on many long-tailed flies, like Joe Bruce's Bullethead Darter, for example.
