Trolling from Bay Bridge to love point

I launched at about 1 o’clock this afternoon and got across to the Eastern shore side of the shipping channel around 2. From there I trolled from the bay bridge all the way up to love point. I had a few hits and then caught a 12” rockfish. After that nothing for about an hour until the water completely calmed down and was almost like glass. I had both rods out of the water and was eating lunch when I saw fish swirling all around me on top of the water so I dropped both lines and started trolling again and almost immediately caught tomorrow nights dinner! After all this I b lined it straight back to Sandy Point.

Love point was the place to be yesterday. Out of all the boats I checked at SPSP, one one boat had any luck and they had two 22 inch from chunking at love point.

Wow! What a fish! I've got to remember that trick, bring along food and eat...... But then, I'm fat enough as it is, so maybe I'll skip the food. Anyways, many congrats!

If you want the fish to bite, a big tip is get elbow deep in lunch or take a potty break. They tend to bite at the least opportune times :-)

Don't forget a casual pee break as well. In all seriousness, I've had some great catches only minutes after peeing, including a giant trevally.

Exactly! Peeing over the side without flipping a sit-in kayak is an art. I think the fish appreciate it. Also it should be noted that taking breaks also creates a momentary change in your technique/speed....and I've def had many hits when I slow down briefly to grab my radio or phone if it's ringing. I guess they'll follow a bait for a while then when they see it change speed and action for a split second, they respond.

Oh and never miss an opportunity to do what I call "auto jigging" aka dead sticking. It's just basically letting out enough line for your soft plastic/jig to sit on the bottom while you eat or apply sunscreen or whatever, and letting the rod sit there. Caught my biggest white perch that way and a 21" striper on a 1/2" piece of fish bites that way, plus many other keeper fish.

Like you say in both your books Alan, don't be afraid to vary your technique...even if it's not intentional in these cases

Thanks for the report. How was clear or not clear was the water with all the rain we've been getting?

It's funny how that happens when your eating. I'll be fishing with some friends and then some says go eat something, so the fish will bite.

The water clarity wasn’t great but a lot better than I thought it would be and once the fish found me the bite was strong. I probably could’ve caught a lot more if I didn’t go straight home after my first keeper.

Ha! that's why in my check-list I have listed "special cup". I just hope no one ever thinks 'special' means something good to drink from.......

I caught a small flounder at Kent Island last year that way. Was trolling and stopped for a minute. When I started up again there was a fish on.
