  • Potomac is flooding bigtime.

Warning to all you guys. Kinda caught me by surprise... and I wasn't even going there. Heard it on the Frederick radio station this afternoon. The Potomac is flooding bigtime. Far from being the worst but still pretty dang high. Be checking the flow graphs for the next week or two to see if the Potomac has calmed down before going fishing there. Howard

Does seem like the heavy flooding is very localized. Up here in northern Frederick County the mountain streams are looking good with nice fishermen type flows. They have gotten high but not flooding.

Point of Rocks USGS gauge has dropped from 25+ feet to 16 feet as of this afternoon. The "danger" level for boating is 5 feet, so it still has a way to go.
The rocks above Fletcher's Boathouse where I fished for shad a couple of weeks ago is currently under 8 feet of water.

The Washington Post has a big photo spread of how the water looks at Great Falls.

The Potomac M&G is this month, what is everyones thoughts regarding quality fishing towards the end of the month when the M&G is scheduled? I'm crossing my fingers...

My experience is that July, August, and September are usual great times to fish the Upper Potomac. May and June are historically unpredictable due to heavy rain events.

Nice photo Howard. I've never fished up by the Lady in the river.

Due to another obligation, I turned down an invitation for a Mark Kovach float trip today on the Potomac. I was asked to be a stand-in because high water postponed a previous trip and one of the original crew could not make it today. I imagine today's outing was rescheduled too.

I avoid the upper Potomac until summer settles in. Floating the river is fun but I prefer someone other than me to pilot the boat. I figure I'm passing and missing a lot fish while making course corrections with the paddle or hurrying along to reach the takeout point on time.

I like to wade. I can thoroughly cover an area that way. Then I go back on the same outing and repeat my trail. The fish move back in shortly after you let an area rest.

Usually, by summer and through the early fall, the water level recedes to allow safe wading in many areas. Of course, fishing can be more challenging at that time due to low and clear water. Long casts and topwater is a good tactic then.

I'll be leading some FSFF outings to Brunswick in August and September. Dates to be determined. PM me if you're interested, and I'll make sure you get an invitation.
