  • Bait and rough water

For the first 1.5 hrs (of scheduled fishing time) thismorning, I spent time looking for the elusive Peeler Crab at several establishments, ending up settling for 2 softcrabs from Safeway in Arnold. First went to Anglers, nothing. Repeated this action for at least 4 other tackle shops both western and eastern shore stores. (My plan was to fish the severn at Jonas Park) Finally realizing that what I was looking for was just a Softcrab. After going to 3 grocery stores I found my Softcrabs. Yes thats plural...I bought more than one for $4.99 ea. I then finally made it to the severn and got nothing for all of my efforts. I then decided to go back over the bridge to see where the campground was for next weekend and hit the state park down the road from it, The name escapes me... ran into a new member with a blue OC on the top of his truck, I think it was Chico (please forgive me if I got it wrong) who ended with the same there for his efforts as I had done on the western side of the bay. Oh yeah, He lost his entire tackle box over the side from the rough water. What a waisted morning...
Anyone want to go fishing tomorrow?? LOL

After Friday fishing, I wanted another day on the water, so I loaded up my stuff this morning, including two boxes of frozen chum and chunks of herring for this afternoon fishing down by Cobb Island but I had a really bad sinus headache that caused me to pack it in and throw everything back in the freezer- damn ragweed is blooming- I talked to my Sister who lives down there and she said the water was rough and there was a lot of holiday boat traffic in and out all day long- also the sewage discharge is polluting the Potomac River system. So maybe the headache was a good thing

I used to be a bait fisherman but I've found gulp alive minnow to work better than bait. For Perch in the Severn I like to use 1" or 3" on road runnner jig heads. Perch smack the hell of em and if you miss them the first time just keep working the jig and they will probably keep hitting. Wife said I have the go ahead for tomorrow if I want to go, but Im not sure I want to go. Im tempted to make a combo crabbing fishing trip, I'll decide later tonight if I want to go...

I use it all- I don't handicap myself to any one method- Nothing works better than chum and cut herring/live lining for large fish-

I will be launching again tomorrow from Tucker street around 7am. I might venture out to the main river depending on the wind... Good luck to all heading out...

                Sunday fishing

Hey Medicyaker, I ran into you coming out of Matapeake. The name is Disco (Don Harrison). It was a rough day. I hope you had better luck on the Severn. By the way, I didn't drop my whole tackle box, just my salt water lures. No big deal just before a saltwater tournament, right!

I have been meaning to do a chumming trip. However, looks like I will be rained out this week. Maybe next week. I understand the fishing has really picked up in the South River. This is the time of year when my part time job drops back to 4-days a week. More time to fish. I have not had much time this summer.

By the way, West Marine generally has peeler crab. It is frozen, better than none.

                    live soft crabs - $1.75

price goes up/down like everywhere but if you're at us 50 & choptank river, look for the red shedding shack built on the water at the marina on 'western' shore,

(the last right before bridge). stay on the 'road' thru the marina but head down towards the water until you see the little red building. they have soft crabs if anyone does and priced right. get some extra for dinner

Nice to have met you Disco, sorry I pronounced your handle wrong and the mixup about the gear you lost. I've lost a good bit of stuff over board as well. I didn't even launch that day at mattapeake. I went out the next day with a few of the guys and my back was in so much pain from the day before getting so beat up that I turned around and didn't get my rods in the water. Made it out to just under the bridge and turned around. Maybe this weekend at the tournament will be better. To the guys that went out with me the other day, sorry I had to turnd around, the pain was just too much...

                        not a great day

Sounds like you had as much trouble as I did. You should have learned from my mistakes. So we didn't catch any fish and we donated some gear to the bottom of the bay. Sounds like the fish won that round.
